“To create a green economy, we will have to move away from a resource-based model”

In Russia, the development of a green economy is at an early stage. There are countries that are ahead of us, but there are also countries where the situation is worse. At the same time, it is encouraging that most Russians are aware that there is something wrong with waste. They talk amongst themselves about waste reform, they pay attention to the large amount of waste around them, and they think about why this is happening. This means that people are at the first stage of understanding the problem, without which further progress is impossible.

The next stage is for them to realise that the situation is also their own fault. This is already a question of the nation’s self-awareness. If there is public demand, production will be forced to change and become more environmentally friendly, because people also work for them.

The strategic issue for creating a green economy is to move away from the extractive, resource-based model. If we do not make this decision voluntarily, we will not be able to rebuild the economy. It is important to move in this direction, taking into account international experience. But it should be understood that no country has a perfect picture. Some incinerate large amounts of waste, others have problems with clean drinking water.
