“People won’t go to another part of town to drop off batteries”

The first thing that can stimulate responsible consumer behaviour is information. The regional waste management operators have these responsibilities. But each region has a different approach to fulfilling them. Some only allocate money to post notices and carry out formal activities, while others really work.

To promote responsible consumption, it is necessary to broadcast programmes on state and commercial TV channels. Various Internet platforms, including the public services portal, should be used to interact with young people. And the younger generation will share information with the older generation.

In addition, it is important to give people the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned. The same bins for collecting used batteries are very disciplined. But this requires more control over the municipalities responsible for installing and cleaning them. If consumers are told how important it is to give up batteries, but are asked to drive from one part of the city to another, they will take it as a mockery.

There are quite a few non-financial ways to involve people in environmental projects. For example, if you take part in a program, you could provide a certain amount of free rides on the metro. This is a state unitary enterprise that receives subsidies from the budget, so it would be logical for it to get involved.
