Decarbonisation requires businesses to invest heavily in R&D and the transfer of new technologies. We are investing too.

A revolutionary technology — primary aluminium electrolysis using an inert anode — is now a kind of key to supplying carbon-neutral aluminium to the market.

This anode is not consumed in the electrolysis process, it is carbon-free, and it does not produce perfluorocarbons or other greenhouse gases, but rather oxygen.

RUSAL, in comparison with western competitors, has made serious progress in the development and implementation of this technology. During its testing, our Krasnoyarsk aluminium smelter has produced about 3,700 tonnes of such metal with a carbon footprint close to zero. At the moment, it is up to the market and our buyers to confirm the commercial viability of this solution with their demand.
