There is no quick change in the use of packaging in the home. Children have been used to getting excited about balloons for years, and gift decorating is a huge industry, complemented by people who are passionate about decorating. To make a difference, informative programmes for both child and adult audiences are needed that will gradually reshape consciousness. Personal example can also make an impact. For example, you can agree to bring un-wrapped flowers to teachers on September 1 or buy one bouquet for the whole class.

Much will also depend on the efforts of government agencies. It is possible to prescribe clear criteria for the decorations to be purchased, the procedure for events, provide grants to stimulate a move away from plastic, allocate time on state TV and radio channels for educational programmes, make documentaries, feature and animated films that address the issue of packaging and its quantity.
