“Food loss is not only an environmental issue, but also an ethical one”

Татьяна Нагорская

Until recently, insufficient attention has been paid to combating organic waste in Russia. This applies to agriculture, food production, manufacturing, retail, restaurant industry and end consumers.

It is important that the recent discussions on the issue result in concrete steps, as food waste has a significant impact on methanogenesis, which in turn affects the climate.

In addition, food waste is an ethical issue. In order to use resources more efficiently, expired food must be passed on to people and animals in need.

In any case, it is important that consumers have incentives to behave positively. For example, for people who produce less waste, it is logical to reduce the fee for its removal. This would be reasonable and fair, since for other resources, such as gas, water and electricity, it is possible to pay according to actual consumption.

People should also be made aware that the amount of waste generated depends, among other things, on their level of consumption. People should be made aware that it is wrong to buy everything and then throw it away.
