The energy balance of urban transport development is directly related to CO2 emissions. My UK colleagues and I conducted a study and concluded that greenhouse gas emissions are lower in cities with more walking and cycling infrastructure.

Of course, the type of fuel that can be used for urban transport has a big impact on our energy balance. Many years ago I saw a hydrogen bus in Hamburg, which had no emissions.

Unfortunately there are still very few electric cars in Russia and we are not yet seeing a trend. It is not enough to manufacture electric cars; we need to build the infrastructure for charging stations. Today we have it only in big cities and it does not even cover all districts.

The energy balance of the transport infrastructure requires a comprehensive solution, which should include: the use of alternative energy sources throughout the country, the construction of new metro stations, and the creation of infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and those who use electric scooters.
