The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt signed an agreement during the COP27 climate summit to build a wind farm complex with a combined capacity of 10 gigawatts.

Masdar, a UAE-based energy company contracted by Hassan Allam Utilities, will build the wind farm in Egypt.

The power plant is expected to produce 47,790 gigawatt hours of clean energy annually and will be able to offset 23.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to about 9% of Egypt’s CO2 emissions today.

At the same time, such a wind farm could save Egypt about $5 billion, based on annual gas costs. Another positive aspect will be the creation of several thousand jobs.

“The scale of this 10 GW onshore wind power megaproject — one of the largest wind farms in the world — is a testament to the ambitions of the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Egypt in the field of renewable energy and demonstrates Masdar’s status as a global leader in clean energy,” UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Masdar Council Chairman Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaberom.

Wind farms are becoming an increasingly common energy source around the world. This autumn, for example, several major offshore wind power projects have come on stream in Europe.
