More than a third of Russians want to switch to an EV

Electric-powered vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in Russia. Thus, according to a study by Renaissance Insurance and Avito Auto, 31% of Russians are willing to buy an EV today. The greatest desire is demonstrated by young people aged 18 to 24 (49%).

At the same time, about half of respondents (45%) agree to invest their money to upgrade their vehicle and convert it to electric fuel. Thirty-eight percent of them said that they would spend up to RUB 500,000 for this purpose. Only 5% of respondents are ready for large investments (from RUB 500 thousand to RUB 1 million).

Among the reasons for switching to electric motors, Russians mention eco-friendliness (49%), low cost of charging (48%) and safety of EVs (34%).

Apart from the statistical data on wishes, there are also real figures confirming the growing interest of Russians in e-transportation. Thus, according to Avtostat, 5,522 new electric cars were sold in our country in the first 7 months of 2023. This is 4 times more than in the same period last year. The top of the most popular electric car brands among Russians are Volkswagen (1,103 units), Evolute (1,029 units), Tesla (749 units), Zeekr (445 units) and Chinese brand Voyah (354 units).

It is worth noting that over the past eight years, the number of electric vehicles in Moscow has also increased by 20 times. If in 2015 there were 235 EVs in the city, today there are about 4,600.

"The more EVs are used in Moscow, the better the ecological situation is. That's why we help owners of such cars. For example, they are exempt from transportation tax and can use city parking lots for free," said Sergei Sobyanin, Mayor of the city, in his Telegram channel.

According to expert forecasts, by 2030 the number of EVs in Moscow will exceed 100,000, which will require active infrastructure development, primarily increasing the number of electric charging stations (ECS). Today, there are about 3.2 thousand ECSs operating in the city. Meanwhile, 250 more publicly accessible charging stations of the new city standard will be installed by the end of 2023.

Similar work is underway in the country's regions. Thus, by the end of the year, about 700 fast EСSs for electric vehicles will be installed in 35 regions of the country.
