The first methodologies for climate projects have been adopted
The Russian Registry of Carbon Units published the first methodologies of climate projects. There are seven methodologies included in the list. They were developed by the Yu.A. Izrael Institute of Global Climate and Ecology.
Two methodologies have been approved for companies in the oil & gas sector: extracting gas from oil wells (which would otherwise be vented to the atmosphere or flared) and utilizing it to generate heat and/or electricity on site, and reducing the flaring (or venting) of associated petroleum gas from oil wells and using it as a feedstock.
In the utilities sector, two methodologies were also included: energy efficiency measures and fuel switching for buildings in small-scale projects, and energy efficiency and/or low-carbon fuel switching in new and existing buildings.
Another methodology is approved for changing soil organic carbon stocks in cropland. Measures can be used by companies that adopt sustainable farmland management practices.
The list also includes guidance on justifying the so-called "additionality" of project activities. The additionality criterion means that the company implements the project in question not as part of normal business operations or as required by law, but precisely with the aim of obtaining a positive climate effect.
The list of methodologies will be supplemented. It is likely that five other methodologies, for which discussions have recently been finalized, will appear on the Registry's website in the near future. These include watering of drained peatlands, production of energy and heat from biomass, increasing electricity generation from HPPs, and others.
